As a healthcare leader in our community, you have the power to ensure the emotional safety of patients and families seeking care at your institution, and I urge you to make it a priority.

Emotional safety is vitally important to my family.

The Emotional Safety Initiative has created a framework that can guide institutions with pillars for emotionally safe care, including screening and assessment, intervention, environment, and staff communication, education, and training. I am including a copy of that framework for your consideration along with this letter.

Using the goals of the Emotional Safety Framework, your institution can ensure that it is leading in emotionally safe and family-centered care. That level of commitment is incredibly important and meaningful to families like mine who come to your institution for our pediatric healthcare needs.

Finally, I would like to highlight the valuable work of child life specialists. These emotional first responders provide critical psychosocial support for children and families coping with the stressful and potentially traumatic experience of hospitalization and bring normalcy to pediatric patients at your institution. Please continue to support and prioritize the work of child life specialists and use them as leaders in ensuring emotional safety for all patients and families at your institution.
